Large data repository migrations are
generally not carried out frequently in organizations because of potential risks
and lack of in-house expertise.
Flawed planning may even lead to major operational disruptions and
consequently loss of revenues for the organization. We offer extensive experience in developing data migration
strategies and planning for each client’s unique situation, establishing data
migration processes and deploying high-performance software tools to handle
large Documentum data repository migrations.
Whether
your data resides in one docbase, multiple docbases, on other legacy and
incompatible systems, or data repositories, we can move your mission-critical
data to your desired destination of the Documentum docbase. With hundreds of
hours of Documentum data migration experience, we can handle large content
repositories containing millions of objects, documents and their renditions.
Data migration is challenging due to complexities associated
with business goals, technical caveats of each client's environment and the
ever-present risk of losing mission-critical data. For these reasons, we have
developed a unique process whereby we work with the customer to identify
business goals, risks, technical issues and time constraints.
Following is the elaboration of each step:
Scope & Business Goals
We involve our clients throughout the entire process to
better understand the reasons for undergoing data migration – which could
ultimately lead to introduction of a new Documentum based system, upgrade, changing
the operating system or the hardware platform altogether. We also identify risks that may arise
by failure to migrate data in a timely manner.
Analysis
We perform an in-depth analysis of the source of the data
repository, format, contained objects and their attributes, values, any
transformation required during the data migration based on business rules,
attribute mapping, including aggregation or separate of values, values
validation and flagging, analysis of distance between source and destination
repositories or proximity, bandwidth and statistics to be collected for
reporting. We also provide an
estimated date of completion, which may be very important for clients under
time constraints.
Approach
We develop a unique strategy for every client, because we
believe that every data migration process is inherently different. The approach is primarily dependent on
the business goals set forth by the client. Approach also includes technical aspects such as full data
migration without data discrimination such as “all objects created prior to
1/1/2003” or partial data migration including folders or cabinets identified by
IDs. The approach is also affected
significantly by the risks involved.
Approach also defines the operational process required to accomplish
data migration and involves identifying resources needed during the
process.
Implementation
We
have developed high-performance software tools for data migration that can be
customized for each client based on the business rules and other needs. Along
with the process, resources and tools, we migrate the data in a timely manner.
Software tools are developed in java programming language and can run on
Windows or Unix platforms.
Validation & Signoff
Once the data is migrated, it is validated against strict business rules for
any anomalies. If no irregularities are discovered, the data migration is
signed-off by the customer.
